Abstract
Unidentified Chrysopeleiinae moths emerging from bird nests were examined, and two taxa were identified: an undescribed species and Ithome lassula Hodges, 1962. The undescribed species is herein named Gisilia ryukyuensis Goto, Tagawa & Yagi sp. nov. Both species were found to be associated with Fabaceae plants introduced to Japan (Acacia confusa and Leucaena leucocephala, respectively), and their larvae feed on the tissues of flowers of each Fabaceae plant. Additionally, observations during rearing suggest that these species use their hosts at high densities and that the larvae of I. lassula pupate outside the flowers of the host plant. Furthermore, comparative analyses of sequence data from the COI gene region were performed. Based on these findings, we discuss their life histories, distribution, and associations with bird nests.
