Abstract
A new species of the genus Omalium Gravenhorst, 1802 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae), O. yasuhikoi Maruyama, Okumura & Hashizume sp. nov., is described from Japan. The new species closely resembles O. japonicum Sharp, 1874 in external appearance but is clearly distinguished by the structure of the male genitalia and the metaventrite punctation. The species was discovered among material collected in western Fukuoka Prefecture, where two externally similar Omalium species occur sympatrically. Most specimens of the type series were collected using a urea trap, which appears to be an effective collecting method for at least Omalium yasuhikoi sp. nov. and O. japonicum.
