Abstract
A palladium catalyst supported on porous poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (Pd(0)/PPS) was developed for the chemoselective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (2.86 ± 0.76 nm) on the PPS support selectively hydrogenated C═C bonds to afford the corresponding saturated carbonyl compounds in good to excellent yields without the use of soluble catalyst poisons. In contrast to conventional Pd/C, Pd(0)/PPS effectively suppressed over-hydrogenation of the carbonyl group and maintained high selectivity under low catalyst loading (maximum turnover number (TON) = 960, maximum turnover frequency (TOF) = 37 h−1) and even under atmospheric hydrogen pressure. The catalyst exhibited broad substrate scope, including α,β-unsaturated ketones and cinnamic acid derivatives. Importantly, Pd(0)/PPS showed a markedly higher ignition temperature (510 °C) than commercial Pd/C (<200 °C) and exhibited no spontaneous ignition after hydrogenation. These results demonstrate that PPS is an effective support for achieving both chemoselective hydrogenation and enhanced catalyst safety.
