屋久島の稀少な固有種と考えられてきたハベマメシジミの正体を解明 ―形態・DNA分析による分類の見直し―

東京大学などの研究グループは、屋久島の固有種・未記載種と考えられてきた微小二枚貝「ハベマメシジミ」を、形態学的特徴とDNA解析の両面から再検討し、世界的に広く分布するハイイロマメシジミ(Euglesa casertana)と同種であることを明らかにした。約70年間、標高約1600mの高地にのみ生息すると考えられていたが、今回、標高約10mの低地にも個体群が存在することを確認。低地では水温が約27℃まで上昇しても生息しており、従来想定されたより広い環境適応性が示された。今回の分類学的整理により、日本産マメシジミ類の分布や分類の再検討が進むと期待される。一方、新たに確認された低地の生息地は屋久島空港の延伸計画区域に含まれ、消失の危機にあることから、生物多様性保全と開発の両立が課題となる。

Abstract

A population of sphaeriid clams with a manuscript name “Pisidium habei Kuroda” has long been believed to be an undescribed species endemic to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage, Yakushima Island, Southern Japan. Although the known distribution of this taxon was restricted in one narrow high-altitude area of the island, one highland and two lowland populations were discovered in this study. We investigated the morphological and genetic characteristics of previously known and newly discovered populations, and conducted a brief survey of habitat temperature and population density. The examined specimens exhibited variations in external and internal shell morphologies within and among populations, with most falling within the range of the cosmopolitan Euglesa casertana (Poli, 1791). The four populations shared similar 16S haplotypes, which were closest to those of E. casertana from Northern Japan. Based on the phylogenetic position and morphological relationships, the Euglesa populations in Yakushima Island with the unavailable manuscript name “Pisidium habei” should be regarded as regional populations of E. casertana. In the lowland habitats of Yakushima Island, water temperatures rose up to 27.1 °C during summer. The significant differences in aquatic environments among the four surveyed localities indicate that Yakushima Island harbors diverse habitats for E. casertana, suggesting that its distribution range in Southern Japan and the surrounding East Asian region potentially includes wider environments than previously assumed. Taxonomic accounts and distributions of many sphaeriids remain uncertain in Japan, and thus, taxonomic and faunal studies employing integrative approaches are required.
