Abstract
This paper proposes a scalable and noise-robust readout architecture for high-density multi-point e-skin applications, termed Direct Digital Readout (DDRO), which directly reads the binary outputs of phase-transition sensors using digital logic circuits. Conventional readout schemes based on analog sensors and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) suffer from rapidly degraded signal margin and conversion accuracy as sensor arrays scale up, due to increased wiring noise and parasitic capacitance and resistance. By fully digitizing the signals on the interconnects, the proposed DDRO structurally suppresses noise sensitivity during array expansion and achieves high scalability for large-scale sensor arrays. A prototype system consisting of a flexible 1024-sensor array and a DDRO chip demonstrates a readout latency of 710 ns per row and a readout energy of 12.2 pJ per sensor. The proposed approach enables full-frame readout of all 1024-sensor array within 23μs while consuming 12 nJ.
