植物由来の天然素材を利用したPFAS代替撥水コーティングを開発(Plant-inspired natural coatings can beat forever chemicals)

米国ワシントン大学セントルイス校の研究チームは、環境中に長期間残留する有機フッ素化合物(PFAS)の代替となる、生分解性の高い撥水コーティング材料を開発した。研究では、植物細胞壁に含まれる天然高分子リグニンと脂肪酸を組み合わせ、植物の維管束組織に存在する防水成分スベリンの構造を模倣した。さらに、ポリ乳酸(PLA)を結合材として加えることで、SLIP(Superhydrophobic Lignin-Integrated Particles)と呼ばれる超撥水性材料を作製した。評価試験では、水滴を強くはじく性質に加え、機械的な耐久性と紫外線に対する安定性を確認した。また、木材腐朽菌を用いた試験では、材料が分解され、最終的に有害性の低い有機物になることが示された。原料には製紙・バイオリファイナリー産業などから得られる植物由来の廃棄物を利用できるため、低コストでの製造も期待される。本成果は、包装材や建築材料などの撥水用途において、PFASへの依存を減らす持続可能な材料技術として注目される。

•SLIPs are biodegradable and show environmental and social-cost benefits over PFAS

Summary

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” are emerging environmental contaminants with adverse human health effects. PFAS usage stems from their inherent chemical inertness. Inspired by the native structure of plant suberin, we design the fluorine-free superhydrophobic lignin-integrated particle (SLIP) coating as a biodegradable alternative to PFAS use in superhydrophobic applications. SLIP coatings achieve pH stability, superhydrophobicity, ultraviolet stability, anti-fouling behavior, and biodegradability due to linking a chemically inert lignin backbone with long-chain alkyl groups to minimize surface energy. Structure analysis reveals that SLIP coatings mimic suberin-enriched structures found in natural wood, enlightening both in planta mechanisms and proving the bio-inspired principle for superhydrophobic design. Finally, rigorous integrated life cycle assessment and social cost analysis reveal that SLIPs simultaneously optimize functional performance, mitigate the substantial health damages of PFAS, and significantly reduce global social costs. We envisage this study to advance the development of next-generation, environmentally sustainable PFAS alternatives.
