Abstract
We use Danish firn-level data to jointly examine the cansal of offshoring and Chinese import competition on carbon emissions, ontpnt. and the emission intensity of output. Offshoring reduces firms’ emission intensity but also increases their production snch that firm-level emissions do not change. Chinese Import competition reduces firms’ pnxinction and their emission intensity. Next, we apply onr firm-level estimates in connterfactual decompositions and in the computation of emission-leakage rates. The resulting evidence shows that offshoring leads to cleaner production in the mannfactnring sector while import competition from China mostly leads to more emissions abroad.
