NASAラングレー研究所は、小型衛星技術「Athena EPIC」を用いたモジュラー型プラットフォームの宇宙実証を実施。NovaWurks社のHISatユニットをブロック状に組み合わせ、センサー搭載モジュール「SensorCraft」を構成。衛星本体が共通制御を担う設計により、搭載センサーは簡素化され、開発期間とコストが大幅削減可能に。気象・地球観測向けに迅速な打ち上げが可能となり、従来数十億円規模のミッションが数百万ドルで実現可能となる
